What’s with this rating? This is another good time to talk about The Rating System. The “To See Rating” is a performance driven recommendation regardless of taste or genre; the “Just Curious Rating” is how much I personally enjoyed the show.

Why such a mixed bag you ask? Because this band had all the performance aesthetics present to make a show great; they came dressed in character, their sound was on point, they were in sync, and they had great stage presence… I just didn’t like it. The lead singer reminded me of Vin Diesel if he were trying to dress up like Marilyn Manson. Homey seemed like a nice guy, but looking at him just made me feel awkward. Correction, wondering if he was looking at ME mad me feel awkward.

Deathbed Repentance reminded me of one of those bands that you would see in a late 90’s Vin Diesel movie. Vin Diesel ends up in Prague or somewhere and walks into a warehouse full of about 3,000 gothic rockers. As the screen pans to the front of the room you see a band. There are sparks flying from all corners of the stage and who you wonder, “Are they going to do an animal sacrifice simply because they are that intense?” Deathbed Repentance was that hardcore morbid quasi industrial band. That was all well and good, but I didn’t know that bands like that still existed. Judging by the eleven people in the audience that were present for their set, I don’t think anyone else knew either.

Musically they had a little NIN thing going on for a bit, but then it just started to sound a little too much like Alice and Chains for me; Alice and Chains mixed with Vin Diesel. LOL! I really don’t know what my obsession is with Vin Diesel right now…

If what they have to offer you tickles your fancy, then hey, I am so happy to have connected you with this band. If not, the video I posted of them is moderately entertaining either way.

Romance

Just Curious Rating 6.5/10

Band Members
Drew Jackson – Vox, Guitar
Michael Ribagin – Bass
Joshua Fant- Drums, Keys
David Blake – Lead Guitar

I enjoyed Romance, but I think I wanted to enjoy Romance a lot more then I actually did. There were some circumstances that contributed to the evening being what it was. But when you are in a situation like that, you have an opportunity to distinguish yourself as a band who is more powerful then their circumstances. I this case, it was a little touch and go.

The music that they have posted online made it very compelling for me to see them live. I was hoping for power, passion, individuality, and energy. All those things sound like a foundation for great show right? The show just ended up being okay.

Here’s where the circumstances come into play. For starters, I don’t think the sound guy and the band were on the same page. They played at El Corazon which is a cozy venue so the sound mixing needs to be just right. The vocal level was just high enough for it to be distracting, but not quite high enough to be distinct. I was hearing a little bit of a David Bowie vocal appeal coming through which I really liked, but it was contending with the lead guitar in a way that was disconcerting. I really like the lead guitar in this outfit. They seem to pull from the past, present, and future with some mathy delay change ups, standard indie-rock riffs, and some ethereal post-rock infusions. Don’t all of those things sound like they would equal greatness? I thought so, and I liked the way they put everything together, but the show just wasn’t all the way there…

Another contributing factor could have been the fact that the show was under-promoted. The crowd wasn’t a barren wasteland, but there just wasn’t the type of energy present in the audience that the band could have feed off of to turn out a high energy performance. Again, things that could have made this show circumstantially mediocre.

I had high hopes for this show and I’m still curious about this band, so I’m willing to pursue this further and see them at a later date. Stay tuned!

In the mean time, please enjoy the clips captured at the 02/25/2009 show.

Sound Off! Brier Rose, Makeup Monsters

February 25th, 2009

Brier Rose

To See Rating 7.2/10
Just Curious Rating 7.2/10

Riley Taylor – lead vocals, guitars, pianos, keys, etc.
Nick Taylor – backing vocals, bass guitars
Michael Rath – backing vocals, guitars
Nathan Gemmet – drums, glockenspiel, etc.

Sound Off Audience Choice Award Winners! (They were robbed…)

Brier Rose has talent beyond their years. The is the only justification that I can come up with that they didn’t sweep this round of semi-finals is… actually there is no justification. At least the fact that they won the Audience Choice Award has some honesty around the fact that the audience thought Brier Rose was best of the evening. I don’t usually compare bands, but this was a competition for goodness sake.

Brier Rose brings lots of elements into their music that are interpreted anew and introduced from their fresh prospective. A simple thing such as a three person harmony reminiscent of old school R&B, that is transformed into a alt-rock infusion adds depth of sound. They let you sit in that melodic foundation for a bit, and then come at your heart strings with the cruel intentions. There are countless love songs, but since Brier Rose changed things up a bit for me, they persuade me to be interested in hearing another one.

Something else that held my interest was the variation in lead instrument; they changed it up from guitar to piano. That is always fun because just when you get into that place when you’re starting to think “ok… I think I understand the scope of what their music sounds like… I’m ready to go,” they flip the switch and give you a whole new sound to discover.

Another thing that I though was moving  was the Riley Taylor’s voice. With his vocal range and clarity, his voice was as pronounce and compelling as a siren. It was very easy for me to fall into the mood and atmosphere that they created.

Thanks Brier! (We’re on a first name basis.)

Makeup Monsters win second round of Sound Off Semi-finals?

I’m not really sure how this contest was scored. In truth, I wasn’t even going to post anything about this duo out of kindness, but since they won the second round of the Sound Off semi-finals, the truth has to be spoken. Purely based on execution, Makeup Monsters were a split pot. I thought that was what Sound Off was a performance based competition but I guess I was wrong.

So there’s Shayne, whom I’m guessing is the “Lead Guy,” and Isaac whom I’ll call “Striped Shirt” since that is what he is wearing in the video that I captured and I don’t know which one is which. Why am I nicknaming the band members you ask? Because, in the face of me not knowing the band members by name, it’s important for me to differentiate between the two as that is the crux of quibble.

So here’s what happened, we have Lead Guy and Stripped Shirt that are multi-facetted musicians switching from Guitar/Lead vocals, to Drums/Backup vocals. Lead Guy was okay at both, but Striped Shirt Excelled! Whenever Striped Shirt was on the drums, the drums were sounding solid. Whenever Striped Shirt was on guitar and lead vocals,  you got a sense of individuality and concept from the band. Those are great things on their own, but a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link, especially when there are only two links!

After a couple change ups, Lead Guy left the mic to play the drums and let Striped shirt take over on the mic for a bit. As this was happening a guy from behind me yelled at Striped Shirt in a politely muted scream, “your voice is way better then the other guys!” I turned around with a nod and a laugh to that guy because he was right! Now, being said that Striped Shirt is  in fact very talented, can you award the strength of the band when the weakness is just as blatant? In this case, apparently you can. Here are clips from their “award winning” sound off performance. I only produced a clip thus far of “striped shirt” on Guitar/Lead vocals to highlight their strength (singular), but if there are requests, I’ll produce the other half as well.

Hotels, The Animals at Night

Hotels

To See Rating 7.2/10
Just Curious Rating 7.2/10

Band Members
Blake Madden – Bass Vocals
Kyle Frankiewich – Keys
Brendan Malec – Guitar
Max Wood – Drums

SOLD OUT!

I was wedged uncomfortably between people as I heard someone from behind say, “I didn’t know Hotels were this popular.” Neither did I to be honest. But, from being one in the crowd of many, here are a few reasons why I say their show was packed.

1) They’ve got the look!
Hotels take the visual appeal of their show to another level; they are all in uniform with name tags like real hotel staff! Now that type of thing might seem like a small aesthetic, but it goes a really long way. It showed they were having fun with their band title, and using it to draw the aspect of theatre into their live show. As a band, the effort you put into your live show honors your fans and shows appreciation that they came out as opposed to just listening at home. I really thought that was cool.

2) They’ve got the feeling!
From where I stood, the band seemed so excited! I could go on for days about the impact of stage presence. You can make the most intense sounding music, but if you look drab while you are playing it, not only does it look awkward but it makes me feel awkward watching. Hotels energy matched there music in a very endearing way. Their excitement made me excited in a way that added to the dimension and dynamic of the music.

Which leads me to, 3) they’ve got the music!
The online representation of Hotels is good; however seeing them live adds so much to it. The energy that they brought made what was impacting, explosive. Plus, Hotels approach to music has a nice vocal instrumental mix. Letting the vocals take the lead for a bit then letting the all of the other elements rise to the occasion really gives Hotels the space rock out and really get into the music. I know I did!

Graig Markel- Vocals, Guitar, Loops, Keys
And Joe Patterson – Drums, Synth Pads

The Animals at Night have some interesting sounding music to listen to. However, seeing them live, I was much more focused on their stage presence. Graig Markel was very interesting to watch. Being rather tall and lanky in form, he was already rather towering to look at from below. With the sharp, jagged, hummingbird like movements, it was hard to take my eyes off oh him. The way different artist get into their music adds an entirely new dimension. I feel like they are assisting me to relate to their music the way that they are intending me to. What I got from The Animals at Night, was intensity. Whether the music was high impact or low, Graig translated intensity throughout the duration of the show.

The music was a pleasant surprise. Reading about The Animals at Night and listening to their music online, I was expecting a relaxing low impact show. WRONG! The Animals at Night must be changing directions because for the most part, I was hyped! You have to see these guys live because the music they have online drastically understates the energy and power they give you at their live show. It was like they tried cramming and eight person retro jam band into two people and the overflow of energy spilled out to the audience. I wanted to dance! If the venue allowed the space for me to set up my tripod I would have. Lucky for me, The Animals at Night are a local act and I can see them again; next time I do, look out, SSG is going to get BUCK.

The Appleseed Cast, By Sunlight

Just Curious Rating 7.0/10

The Appleseed Cast put on a highly anticipated show. In discussing the show with a fellow music writer, he mentioned that he was looking forward to seeing how much of the new album Sagarmatha was going to be played seeing how it is predominantly instrumental. Would this mark a directional change by The Appleseed Cast moving from Emo towards Post-Rock?

During the set I noticed something else that was curious. The vocals, although warm and filling the room, were a bit muddled. Was this a faux pas by the Chop Suey sound man? There was some speculation between friends that perhaps the sound guy just needed to turn the mic up, or, perhaps the vocal level was an intentionally crafted by the band. Could this have been because they were mapping their new post-rock direction not only with their new music, but also with their existing music having the vocals be the fifth instrument as opposed to their songs being vocal centric? Suddenly the vocal level went up. Was the previous speculation off base? We thought so until Christopher Cirsci requested from the stage, “If you just turned my mic up, please turn it back down.” OH SNAP! The Appleseed Cast is changing directions and I was happy to be present for this predominantly instrumental set.

The music they played was emotionally evocative on many levels. If you a die-hard fan, they gave you some of the classics; if you were interested in their forward movement, they gave you plenty of their new material to fall into. The performance quality left nothing to be asked for. The only thing that I thought separated the die-hard fans from the new coming fans was the length of the set. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy The Appleseed Cast, but I’m not a die-hard, and I was good after about 45 minutes. They played for an hour, and then they announced that they were going to “take five.” I wasn’t sure if that was the most awesome way to bypass the pretentious begging for an encore, or if they were gong to play another full set! I didn’t stick around to find out, but what I did see, I really enjoyed.

When By Sunlight started their set, they were a bit behind the eight ball. With their fans and fans of The Appleseed Cast streaming in, the place was packed. That is usually a good thing, but in this case the chatter level was so high that I could barely hear Mike Sparks speak when he was trying to soften the crowd. I was actually really irritated by this. Come one people! I’m not saying that you aren’t allowed to talk at shows, but please, when it gets to the point where I can’t even hear the band over you, you just need to shut up. People aren’t paying money to go to a show and hear your mouth. But the show must go on!

Right before the started their first song Mike announced, “We are going to play 32 minutes of mid-level in your face rock and roll!” That statement being something of a paradox was actually very accurate. Their style pulls from so many different elements such as the retro sounding vocals, math-rock, and a little post-rock infusion, but they somehow manage to have the overall feeling of the music be very chill and relaxing. Their music made me feel optimistic.

As the set progressed you could tell that the crowd was getting into it by the gradual decreasing level of chatter. By Sunlight flowed from one song to another so smoothly I wasn’t sure when one song ended and another one began. With all the changing styles that were distinct yet beautifully melded, they held my interest from start to finish.

SOL aka Solzilla Moravia

“SOL! … SOL! … SOL! … SOL! ,,, SOL! … SOL! … SOL!”

Sol had an album release party on Friday the 13th and what a party it was. Chop Suey was PACKED! It’s a sure thing that all the homies were there to see him because, once the next act Scribes(aka Smoke Break) came on, the place all but cleared out.

Sol packed the house with good reason. This ambitious 20 year old had been working towards this album release for the past two years, and his work has not gone unnoticed. When you are dealing with subject matter as delicate as life and your place in it, demographic socialism, and politics, it has to come from someplace real if anyone is going to relate to it.  Not only does Sol give us realism, he gives it to us from his own experiences in a way that is so personal, you feel like his friend. Sol took his time putting his lifeblood into this album. I hesitate to say this, but I haven’t had similar feelings about a hip-hap artist/rapper since 2Pac. That type of style can’t be taught; Sol was born to do this.

As far as the feeling of the crowd was concerned, I feel confident in saying that they felt the same way that I did. There was no begging for participation; when Sol jumped, the room jumped. When Sol moved his hands from side to side, the room moved their hands from side to side; I have never seen a crowd as involved at an independent hip-hop show as I did that night.

Those were some big words, but you don’t have to take my word for it! Please enjoy the clips from Sol’s Album Release Party on his lucky day, Friday the 13th. Also, check out his new masterfully produced album, “The Ride.”

NO! Majesty – MAD RAD

February 17th, 2009

To See Rating 8/10
Just Curious Rating 8.5/10

Band Members
Terry Radjaw- Rapper, Singer, Beard Wearer
Buffalo Madonna – Rapper, Singer, Floor Dancer
P Smoov – Rapper, Singer, Music Composer
Darwin – Live DJ, Hypeman, Erk & Jerker

When I do these write ups, I usually watch the video clips so I can be in the same head space that I was in when I saw the show. With Mad Rad I had a problem. They were so entertaining, I couldn’t tare my attention away from clips to write anything! Seeing them live is like that x10.

As mentioned by Buffalo Madonna on when they were interviewed by yours truly, Mad Rad doesn’t play to anyone’s ear accept the people that want to listen. Having a niche fan base in the Hip-Hop community creates a level of camaraderie so strong, no matter where or when they show up on a bill, their fans make them the headliners.

Around the beginning of the year I read that Mad Rad was the up and coming voice of Seattle Hip-Hop. At face value that statement is arguable at best. However when you get to know Mad Rad, that statement makes perfect sense. If I were to pick out a few cardinal attributes about the Seattle Music Scene, I would say: unpredictable, racy, eclectic, and at times flippant. I would say that within their style of Hip-Hop, Mad Rad embodies all of those attributes in a package that is so accessible,  it’s hard not to like them.

Another enigma about Mad Rad that I found worth investigation was, how are all those boys so sexy? The answer I found after a VERY labor intensive process(not really) was, there is something for everyone. They’ve got Understated Sexy(Darwin), Pretty Boy/Bad Boy Sexy(P Smoov), Skinny Jeans/Nasty Sexy(Buffalo), and Manly Sexy(Radjaw). What also comes across is none of them are playing a part, that really is who they are. Radjaw could take me home and beat me any day of the week. (J/K)

Whether you love them or love to hate them, if you’ve seen Mad Rad live I’m sure you’ll agree that they’ve got it all. Please enjoy the clips captured at the NO! Majesty event.

An Interview with Mad Rad

February 17th, 2009

So here it is. If you are a Line Out reader you have probably been hearing banter about this band for a while now.

Quoted From 206 Proof: “I heard they got into a fight and as a result are no longer performing with Blue Scholars/Common Market.”

Quoted From a post by Eric Grandy“Apparently over the weekend they got into a fight that ended up involving security and eventually cops (some people have told me that they were “fighting cops” but I find that hard to believe). At least a couple of the dudes spent a few nights in jail.”

Quoted From Charles Mudede: “Mad Rad were at a hiphop dinner party hosted by the photographer Chase Jarvis and underground restaurateur Michael Hebberoy… [E]ach crew gave a small performance in a space bordered by three long (even gothic) tables. Only one performance was not chill and relaxed; only one performance was on the verge of collapsing the whole event into a night of chaos… Mad Rad’s Buffalo Madonna,,, repeatedly slammed the dinner table into a cutlery-jingling beat. Everyone was waiting for the beat that would finally break the table and plunge us into a confusion of plates, forks, and flying food.”

With all this talk I thought to myself, “I am going to review them anyway, it’s time for SSG to step up for the people!!! SSG WANT’S SOME ANSWERS! Are these boys being hated on, or are they in fact the “bad boys of this town?”

With these questions in mind and a few others, I went in to get their side of the story. Without any further ado, I give you the interview with Mad Rad.

WTF? These dudes were absolutely ridiculous! Granted, I’m sure their accolades were intentional, but come on! The only reason I am even posting anything about this band is because they are like a rolling head; even though it’s horrible, you just can’t look away.

What was going on here? I don’t even know. Lyrically and musically it was a work of chaos. I would say that they are something of a social satire, but that might be glorifying them in a way that is undeserved like calling a five-year-old’s drawing a work of a modern art genius. I think The Beats, Man are just dudes that have fun and don’t give a crap about anything; whomever decides to listen, who cares!

The more I think about their bird-flipping lassitude, the more I like it. It takes something to put yourself out there when you’ve got to know a lot of people won’t get it and might not like. But if you’re into what you’re doing, that’s what you’re going to do! If anyone doesn’t like it(ME), WHO CARES!

Do what you do TB,M! As far as if it is something you are into, I give you their clips and you can decide for yourself.

“Make some noise for my boy GMK… I SAID MAKE SOME NOISE FOR MY BOY GMK!” GMK did in fact deserve people to be cheering for him, but I kid you not, there were times when the call to “make some noise” sounded like it was going to be followed by a threat.

GMK was fun, had lots of energy, but was behind the eight ball as the first opening act for a highly anticipated headliner. If anyone could have kept the crowd involved though, it was this guy. I think he just about tried anything to get involvement. i.e. Make some noise if you like hip-hop… Make some noise if you LIKE MONEY… make some noise if you’ve gone to the bathroom today! Okay I made that last one up. As captured in the clip, (I’m so bad) there were a few moments when i was afraid that our little GMK was going to die from dehydration and exhaustion, but homey bounced back. I knew he would.

Musically, I think GMK has a really cool thing going on. His beats were tight and were really easy to get into. He was also able to deliver good representation of his recorded material. I find with hip-hop or rap, the vocal quality will be on point recorded, but live, they sound like dying animals. It’s really hard to keep a key tone when you are out of breath, trying to work the crowd, and dancing around. GMK gets some respect from me for pulling it off, because I know that homey was tired!

Question. If you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, can you judge a band by their title? In this case the answer is yes. Sleepy Eyes of Death took me on a trip to the underworld. With all the smoke, bright lights, and strobe, I felt like I was in the midst of Dante’s Inferno. But you know what? If Hell comes with a show like this, I’ll take two!

Visually, SEOD gave an extremely stimulating show. The Holy Mountain venue could have been the perfect place to see them. Why do you ask? Well, The Holy Mountain isn’t exactly a venue; it is a warehouse space/party house run by people who love music and are offering their living space to further it. Necessity being the mother of invention, the show was set up in a little cove in the back of the room. With the band saturating themselves with fog and orchestrating themselves with light, SEOD was able to create a pit of atmosphere that was so overpowering that I was more then willing to submit to it.

I also really liked how there was so much versatility from song to song, and how they also manage to give us versatility within each individual song. With the electronic vocals that they used, their approach to music reminded me of the dreamy style of Mogwai. Although I found similarities, SEOD infuses their music with darkness and  turn the intensity level up from a 5 to about a 8. If they were inspired by that niche aspect of Mogwai,  they explored all the different aspects within it to make their own creation. That was my impression anyway, whatever yours will be I’m sure you will agree that SEOD gives a high impact show on many levels.

Peep this!

So I was at The Holy Mountain venue, hanging out… and look who comes strolling in the door. It was Mike, a guitar player from Joy Wants Eternity! I was thinking, “How nice, Mike is showing up to support.” Was I on the right track? Yes and no. Mike was showing up to support, but in the capacity of drumming for Blue Light Curtain.

This being my first exposure to Blue Light Curtain, my impression was that the music was a combination of pop, metal, and drone.  Although conceptually interesting, I didn’t think the execution made it very accessible. I’m not commenting  as to weather music’s accessibility makes it good or bad, but I really wasn’t that into it. I could see this being the type of show some would be very into, but it just left me feeling a little awkward.  Visually, I felt their stage presence fit into my opinion of accessibility with this band; It was a little flat for my taste, but it had a natural flow with the music.

I think that if this band is around for a while, they could draw a crowd that gets their music, and those fans will probably be their fans for a long time. Sadly, I don’t know if I’ll be one of them.

With such a drastic difference in my “To See Rating” and my “Just Curious Rating” of this event, this is the perfect time to remind everyone that the “Just Curious Rating” is pointing to my personal experience of THIS show in particular, and the “To See Rating” is my recommendation for you invest your time and money to see the artist/band live.

With that said, the only reasonable question is, “Why such a mixed bag?” Well, first let me state for the record that I am a lover of The Album Leaf, but to be honest, I wasn’t feeling this show. My feelings about this show had nothing to do with the material played or the execution of it, I just didn’t feel like the setting was very conducive for me to get into the music. I love Neumos, they have my favorite sound system/sound technicians in the Seattle Independent Music Scene, but I think The Album Leaf would be a lot easier to fall into in a more intimate setting.

In my experience, when you are dealing with a band that has such a relaxing ambient approach to music, your experience can greatly depend on the rapt attention of your fellow concert attendees; if people are talking through the concert, it simply does not afford me the space to get into it. With the level of noise on this particular night, The Alum Leaf just seemed to float over the top like background music. That being said, my experience could have been completely different simply if I were closer to the stage. But you know what? I didn’t know that for my ultimate concert experience I needed to bring my GPS, and if my experience could be so circumstantial, was it really all that good?

On a more positive note, I felt that Jimmy Lavalle was a very charismatic entertainer. Featured in the clip is a sneak peak of some new material that he is currently recording. Also, at the end of his show he invited the bands he was on tour with,  Anomie Belle and Black Mamba, to join him and his live band on stage to really end the evening with a bang. That was a beautiful experience and I’m happy to share it with you.
