In support of Teen Dream, to be released on January 26, 2010, Beach House is going on tour! Teen Dream is the group’s best work to date, and having seen one of the shows debuting the material from this album, I can attest that you are not going to want to miss the show coming to a city near you. Check out a sample of the goodness, and see the tour dates below!
Sun Jan 24 Park City, UT Sundance Festival Show
Tues Jan 26 New York Bell House (Record Release Show)
Shelley Shortis going to be on tour for almost the entire rest of the year in support of new new album, A Cave, A Canoo, and there will be no excuse to miss her. It seems like she’ll be everywhere bringing that haunting, acoustic quietness of her’s along. Her show at Seattle’s new and super secret, ultra-awesome Healthy Times Fun Club was just that — low-volume. Alexis Gideon on a second guitar added a spacey and atmospheric slide guitar infusion. Gideon really added to the feel of the show, and everyone in the room was moved to silence. Never has such a respectful audience been seen in Seattle; everyone there had to fall in love a little.
A Cave, A Canoo is much the same in its entirety — warm, pensive songs that really showcase Short’s abilities as a singer/songwriter both with a guitar and a piano. One could worry that she’d get lost in the mire of female singer/songwriters, but Shelly Short won’t; she’s too good to ignore. Hush are doing a preorder for A Cave, A Canoo, and will be shipping signed copies at least a week before the release date on October 13th. Be sure to get yours!

WHY? is back, and we’ve got links to some pretty fantastic Yoni Wolf solo live material! Check it—these are exclusive tracks, including one of Yoni doing a Pavement cover. It seems like such a great idea—why hadn’t it happened before? WHY? are the xylophonic heirs to what was Pavement’s place in alternative music. Check the tracks out here, at The Bay Bridged
In a way, listening to Yoni perform solo also makes sense, since he started the band as a solo project. He used to be WHY?, and now they’re a band. Be on the lookout, because on September 22ndWHY? returns with Eskimo Snow, which was recorded at the same time as Alopecia, showing us a darker side to the group’s sound. Earlier this year, as the band prepared for the new album’s release, Yoni performed some solo shows that showcased the vulnerable, moving core that underlies his band’s distinctly layered arrangements.

Akron/Family’s going on tour, and they’ll be in Seattle for the Bumbershoot festival.
Set’em Wild, Set’em Free, their fifth and most openly tie-dyed record, is as positive, effective, and happy an effort as I’ve encountered this year. They’ll be touring with Wooden Wand, Jeffrey Lewis & the Junkyard, and my personal favorites, Slaraffenland, last seen at the Nectar in Seattle for last year’s “Danish Dynamite” tour with Efterklang. Unfortunately, they won’t be on the west coast part of the tour.
To celebrate and promote this tour, their label Dead Oceans, will release three Akron/Family 7″s. Each 7-inch will feature one song from Set’em Wild, Set’em Free, and one new song on the flipside. These are tour exclusives, with the leftovers being sold from the band’s website at akronfamily.com.
Akron/Family’s set at Bumbershoot2009 will not be one to miss– they have a tendency to involve the audience in their raucous hippy drum-chants and they invite other musicians on-stage with them for an ‘Akron/Family Big Band’ effect. They did it with The Dodos and Megafaun on their last tour, and word is they’ve worked out the same deal with Slaraffenland and Jeffrey Lewis & the Junkyard for this tour (Slaraffenland and Efterklang did it on their last tour together, effectively becoming the monstrous Slaraffenklang for two or three songs every night).
For a taste of the magic that will happen on-stage on this tour, be sure check out this hot clip from Akron/Family at SXSW in April of 2009.
