For over a decade, Glasgow, Scotland-based band Camera Obscura has been charming listeners with echoing vocals and deep lyrics. Having survived band re-arrangements and other challenges faced by groups with a long history, Camera Obscura released their fourth album My Maudlin Career last year. Considered one of the band’s breakthrough albums, My Maudlin Career is said to carry Camera Obscura’s well-known layered, harmonic sound while adding a more mature element of exploring darker themes lyrically.
Full of lush and delightful tracks led by singer Traceyanne Campbell’s sweet voice, Camera Obscura succeeds in creating a collection of gentle ballads with light, bouncy musical arrangements sure to induce absolute glee within the listener, while a closer listen to the lyrics often reveal heartbreak. Popular single “The Sweetest Thing,” has all of the musical elements that flow perfectly to establish a the cheery sense of pre-date excitement, while the lyrics actually tell of the opposite:
I’m going on a date tonight
To try to fall out of love with you
I know this is a crime
But I don’t know what else to do
My love, you’re in a magazine
My love, you’re doing fine, you’re on TV
You pull my heart out and then you run away
From Chicago to Cleveland you leave me pain
You leave me pain
When you’re lucid you’re the sweetest thing
I would trade my mother to hear you sing
Camera Obscura has been selling out shows since the debut of their latest album, and the Pacific Northwest is lucky enough to host them at Sasquatch! 2010. Camera Obscura will be performing on the third day of the festival, Monday, May 31.
This is going to be another amazing show at Sasquatch! 2010. Minus the Bear is the kind of music that people make memories too. Where were you in life in 2002 when Highly Refined Pirates came out? Do you remember the first time you heard “Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse”? Click the video below, and continue reading. As Dave Knudson’s signature tapping and looping ease you into grace, let the feelings of calm, peace, love, and gratitude wash over you. Jake Snider’s vocals leave an indelible mark in the listener’s ear.
Two star hotel
where the stars don’t mean anything.
We’ve got to get something
to eat and to drink yeah,
and find a place to stay
that’s not far off the main way-
we’ve got to plan our day:
Rodin at D’Orsay
and find a way to cram it all in
before we drink hard again
Let’s get a bottle and drink alone tonight
Let’s get a bottle and drink alone tonight!
Through the years, Minus the Bear has brought joy, romance and a voice to quiet thoughts. Minus the Bear makes music to live by. If they play “Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse,” I might cry. Sasquatch! 2010, here we come!
In the Spirit if merrymaking, we here at SSG are going to be periodically glee-blurbing Sasquatch! 2010 shows that we are excited about. To start the party off, here’s some glee about MGMT.
MGMT is going to bringing the happiness on the final day of Sasquatch! 2010. MGMT is one of the most popular, critically acclaimed bands in the world, and for good reason. No matter how uptight a listener might be or how bad of a day you might be having, MGMT will instantly make you want to shake your hair out and dance. I imagine that MGMT will be on the main stage. Imagine how grand it is going to be with the beautiful landscape behind this ultimate party band; people will be dancing everywhere.
In the featured video “Electric Feel,” MGMT depicts a futuristic jungle party where they harpoon the moon, pull it down to earth, spill it’s inner goodness, wipe it all over themselves, and dance, dance, dance! I don’t think we’ll be pulling down anything lunar at Sasquatch!, but it is sure to be and out-of-this world crazy good time. There will be people grooving in the grassy knolls and pressing their three day post-shower bodies up against each other in blessed, stinky euphoria. Get excited! You get to see MGMT at Sasquatch! 2010. Presale tickets are available NOW!

Does anyone even know the history of the Sasquatch music festival? It was founded in 2002 by Adam Zacks who aimed to satiate eclectic music tastes by putting on a single event that “reflects the independent spirit of the Pacific Northwest, respects the artists and audience, and celebrates the grandeur of The Gorge.” This year’s 8th annual Sasquatch Music festival continues to embody this ideal, featuring a number of local and national acts, all taking place during Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31, at The Gorge.
Now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for: While every other blog in town to going to town on the lineup, SSG’s got the skinny on Sasquatch ticket information.

Surfer Blood calls West Palm Beach home and, while still in their early 20s, pen summery indie songs that even the most hook-laden power pop band would rightfully be jealous of. Called “irresistibly catchy” by Pitchfork, Surfer Blood’s critically acclaimed debut album, Astro Coast, was released on January 19.
Atlas Sound is the solo moniker of Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, so named since 1994, when a sixth-grade Bradford made recordings on a karaoke cassette machine. Now signed to 4AD, Atlas Sound is those ideas that he “can’t make work with a five piece rock band,” employing stream-of-consciousness writing alongside ambient electronics.
Fresh Espresso, named by local blog SoundOnTheSound as representatives of “the next wave of Seattle hip-hop,” is producer/composer P Smoov (of Mad Rad) and MC Rik Rude.
