New Music: Ravenna Woods

Posted by James Gannon on January 5th, 2010 at 1:01 PM

It’s a new year, and even a new decade, so how about some new music!? To kick off the Twenty Ten’s, SSG brings you the fresh acoustic sounds of Ravenna Woods. Soon to release their debut full length album, this group manifests frenzied guitar picking with vocals and lyrics that dynamically trade off between raw and ethereal. Layered into the mix are violins, mandolins, and even xylophones complemented by oh so subtle percussion.

The album’s eponymous track “Demons and Lakes” showcases the groups flagship sound. The slightly coarse vocals that Chris Cunningham has used in his other project Navigator vs. Navigator provide striking contrast to the otherwise sweet folky melodies, giving this band just the right edge to hold their own in the indie rock arena.

Though off the beaten path of the rest of the album, “While the Town is Sleeping” concludes their upcoming album Demons and Lakes, with an eerie dreamlike sound that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end.

Ravenna Woods plays The Black Lodge on  Saturday, January 23rd.
