Carissa’s Wierd, Aveo @ Showbox Market | 07/09 | 8pm| $18 Adv

You better not miss this one.  You just might regret it for the rest of your life.

This is a once in a lifetime show.  This reunion show is slated as a singular event, promoting the Hardly Art release They Only Miss You When You Leave: Songs 1996-2003, which will serve as a retrospective for Carissa’s Wierd.  You will most definitely have a discussion with a friend at a bar in the future, and Carissa’s Wierd will come up, and you have the choice to say one of two things: (1) Yeah, I caught their reunion show at the Showbox a couple years back, it was really amazing, I’m so glad I caught that show — or, (2) I know!  I love that band!  I am so pissed I missed that reunion show a couple years ago at the Showbox!  I heard it was so good!

Don’t be the person that says the second statement.  You only live once, after all.

If you don’t know Carissa’s Wierd, you’re probably already noticing that I’m misspelling their name.  Well, I’m not.  It’s an intentional misspelling.  (As one of their albums, I Before E joked.)  They played what is often termed “chamber rock” — although, it is certainly spacey and amorphous like what we would now call post-rock.  CW’s music is intensely emotional.  With their often super-depressing and strangely familiar lyrics, once Carissa’s Wierd gets it’s hook in you, you might not be able to wiggle free.  There was a distinct tendency in the Seattle music scene in the late 90′s that explored instrumental themes amidst rock dynamics (for example, Sharks Keep Moving.)  Carissa’s Wierd stood by themselves however, and were content playing the music they loved creating.

After officially breaking up in 2003, the members of Carissa’s Wierd went on to play in Band of Horses, Grand Archives, Sera Cahoone, and S.  Like many indie “successes,” popularity comes long after the breakup.  Don’t miss your chance to legitimately claim you liked them all along.

Opening up for Carissa’s Wierd is Aveo.  Aveo plays indie infused acoustic rock ballads with a melancholic lean.  They will be an adequate warm up for the emotional whip-lash that going from normal life to a Carissa’s Wierd performance can induce.  Tickets are still available via Ticketmaster, get ‘em before it sells out.

Oh yeah, SSG HAS A PAIR OF TICKETS TO GIVEAWAY! If you want to include in your option 1 story that you not only saw Carissa’s Wierd reunion show, but that you got to roll in VIP style, e-mail contests@seattleshowgal.com with the phrase “I before E!” in the subject line. Please include your names for the guest list, or you have no chance of winning.
