Del the Funky Homosapien is arguably one of the greatest and funniest emcees in the country and he will be making his way to Neumos on Sunday night. Originally known for the tight rhymes and funny lyrics from his two albums I Wish My Brother George Was Here and No Need for Alarm, the Oakland-based rapper and cousin of Ice Cube partook in 1993’s Judgement Night Soundtrack in collaboration with Dinosaur Jr and gained himself an entirely new audience of angst-ridden teenage alternative rockers. Del then expanded his horizons further by involving himself in 2000’s Delton 3030 project with superstar producer Dan the Automator and ninja DJ Kid Koala (who will be in Seattle next week!). Deltron was a sci-fi project that put Del into a mech suit, battling other emcees for domination and establishing him as the hero of “centuries of hip-hop legacy.”

This past summer, Del released his newest album Funk Man (The Stimulus Package), available for free download because, according to a Billboard interview, Del states, “You ain’t gonna buy it. I know you ain’t gonna buy it. But you might listen to it if I give it to you.” The songs on the album also reflect Del’s frustrations with the current state of the hip hop and pop music scenes, but unlike popular rap that tends to be dark and violent, Del brings a sense of humor to the rap genre by delivering lyrics that flow easily and stand a good chance of bringing a grin to your face. l
