Four Tet @ Chop Suey | 2/23 | 8pm doors | 21+ | $12-$14

Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, doesn’t play your typical electronic music. His beats are more organic; mixing styles such as jazz, hip-hop, folk, and electronica into a cohesive sound that is discreetly powerful and extremely danceable. The kind of music that you want to listen to carefully to pick out the subtleties, but at the same time you want to shake your rump to it. This is a thinking man’s dance music, not just deep bass beats that make the room shake.
Four Tet started creating music as a solo artist in 1998 when he took leave from the post-rock band Fridge while the two other members went to college. In 2001 he released his second full-length album, Pause. It was so ambitious, that his style of music given a new sub-genre, dubbed “folktronica” because of his heavy use of folk and electronic beats. In 2003, Four Tet was the opening band on Radiohead’s Hail To The Thief European tour. He even had his remix of the song “Scatterbrain” released as the B-side to the Radiohead single “2+2=5.” The list of remixes he’s done is as varied as the artist himself. He’s done remixes of the Aphex Twins, Beth Orton, Kings of Convenience, Andrew Bird, Bloc Party, and many more famous musicians.
Four Tet recently released his fifth full-length album, There is Love in You. The album was created after Four Tet spent more than a year as a resident DJ at the famed London club Plastic People. He refined his sound by testing it on a nightly basis in front of a live crowd. The result is his most focused album to date, and one that I definitely recommend picking up.
When playing live, Four Tet’s songs become more simple and more bouncy, beckoning the audience to get lost in its simplistic beauty. Lucky for us, Four Tet is on tour in support of his recent album, There is Love in You, and he’ll be playing at Chop Suey with Nathan Fake and eR Don on Tuesday night. It’s going to be an amazing show, even if you’re not a big fan of electronic music.
