Gregory Alan Isakov an Dave McGraw @ High Dive | 12/10 | 8pm (21+) | $10

With his vibrant voice, deep guitar style, and thought-provoking lyrics, Gregory Alan Isakov’s folk music is sure to leave a lasting impression on listeners. Isakov was born in South Africa, raised in Philadelphia, and currently resides in Boulder, CO. His solo acoustic tour began in 1999, and since then, he has recorded several albums and toured with many popular artists including Ani Difranco, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Alexi Murdoch, Fiona Apple, and most recently, Brandi Carlile, who is also featured on Isakov’s newest release This Empty Northern Hemisphere, which is considered one of his best albums.
Upon hearing Isakov’s music, you might hear influences of Iron and Wine, Ray LaMontagne, and Citizen Cope. His large, warm voice is accompanied by equally impactful instrumentals and reflective lyrics that will linger in your mind long after the music stops. His songs tell stories of longing, heartache, and hope, and will tug at your heartstrings. With Brandi Carlile’s sweet harmonies joining Iskov on half of the tracks from “This Northern Hemisphere,” this is an album you absolutely must listen to. Better yet, catch Gregory Alan Isakov (sans Brandi Carlile) live twice today–at 1:30pm on KEXP, and in-person at High Dive tonight. Isakov’s style is best described as nostalgic, so don’t expect a rowdy, dance-ready crowd at his live shows, but rather, a swaying, doe-eyed audience that is captivated by his every word.
