Hearing the name Magik Markers will probably bring back childhood memories of using the popular pens to graffitti your school-desk or doing other detention-worthy impish deeds.  In this case, Magik Markers are a two member (formerly three) from Connecticut whose garage rock music would serve as a perfect backdrop for doing said deeds.  After opening for Sonic Youth in 2004, Magik Markers gained momentum to become known for their captivating live performances that often are regarded as more appealing that their records.  The sounds of straining, shrieking guitars mix with Elisa Ambrogio’s free-ranging vocals to convey a sense of confidence on the brink of instability.  Similarly, the lyrics themselves focus on dark subjects such as lust, decay, and rebellion.

Magik Markers’ violent, raw sound has evolved since 2002 over dozens of EPs and LPs.  Their latest big release Balf Quarry was released in early 2009, and while some regard the band’s noise rock sound as a close parallel to their 2007 big hit Boss, others pick out that the songs themselves are more organized and coherent on the new album.  Balf Quarry focuses on the politics, people, and culture of Americana, lyrically targeting everything from alcohol to lawmakers to gamblers. One of Elisa’s most hard-hitting lines that sums up the feel of the album is, “You had a revolution in your head. Too bad you couldn’t make it out of bed.” For lyrics that might occur as accusation, Magik Markers has a way of making their music open, dancy, and fun.

For a profound and challenging music experience that will resonate with you long after the music stops, sample some songs by Magik Markers, and come see them live at Chop Suey tomorrow! For your chance to win two free tickets, click HERE, or e-mail contests@seattleshowgal.com with the words “Magik Markers rock my world!” in the subject line. See you tomorrow night!
